Factors to Consider When Buying a Dishwasher

Dishwashers are a luxury that has become more of a necessity these days for homeowners. We all lead busy lives because of our jobs, friends, families, and other commitments. This makes doing trivial tasks such as washing the dishes one of the last things we want to do. After a nice meal and a long workday, we do not feel like doing the dishes. However, the dishes still need to be cleaned. That is what makes dishwashers so attractive. Here are some factors to consider when choosing your new dishwasher:

·      Size: The most common size dishwasher is 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 35 inches high. Some models have adjustable legs that allow you to adjust the height by up to a few inches. There are smaller models that can be as slim as 18 inches wide. There are also larger models that can measure up to 36 inches wide. Be sure to consider the space you have available for a dishwasher.

·      Material: The major components of every dishwasher are made of plastic or steel. The dish racks are usually steel coated with PVC to prevent them from scratching your dishes. The inside tub can be made of plastic or stainless steel. Stainless steel withstands heat better and will not rust. It also retains heat better which allows your dishes to dry faster and use less energy doing so. The outside door panel of your dishwasher will be either stainless steel, white, black, beige, or slate. Keep this in mind so that it matches your kitchen cabinetry.

·      Features: Not all dishwashers have the same features. Features that may be available include child safety locks, different filter types, a hard food cycle, adjustable dish racks, and soil sensors. Think about which features will really make your life easier and which are just nice to have. This will make shopping for the right one for you much easier.

·      Type of Dishwasher: There are three types of dishwashers including portable, built-in, and countertop models. Countertop models are the most affordable but small. They are likely not feasible if you have a small family with children. Portable models are smaller than built-in ones but larger than countertop ones. They do not require professional installation. Built-in models are the ones you see that are in between the kitchen cabinets and below the countertops. They are typically the largest and the price is influenced by their size and features.

·      Cost: Have a budget and stick to it. Dishwashers can quickly become expensive, especially when you get luxury ones with many features. The cost of a dishwasher can range from about $250 to over $2,000, not including installation. The installation will likely cost you an additional few hundred dollars.
